EUROCENTRICITY
The distinctive modern designs for which Milan has become famous in clothing, furniture, graphics, and automobiles have an older component. The city's giant cathedral, or Duomo, was begun in 1386. Five centuries later it was completed—the whole creating a gothic style like no other. Milan has made its mark as an industrial and financial center that looks north to the rest of Europe.
