INDIA'S CENTERPIECE
The Jama Masjid mosque of "Old" Delhi, completed in 1658 and one of India's largest, recalls the period when Islamic Moguls controlled the city. In 1912, Britain, the new ruler, moved the capital from Kolkata (Calcutta) and began to rebuild a section south of the old city as a governmental center, designating it "New" Delhi. When complete in two decades, Europeanized Delhi reflected the grandiosity of the empire, with broad, tree-lined boulevards and parks, bungalows and public buildings. After independence India maintained the city as its capital. Its economy rests on government, but it is also a transportation hub and manufacturing and business center.
