An old Sioux cure for snakebiteand today a source of echinacea, used against infectionpurple coneflowers thrive throughout the Badlands. Even with scant rainfall, more than 200 species of wildflowers find a foothold in the national park. More important, over 50 grass species stitch together the mixed-grass prairie surrounding and winding through the park, including native buffalo grass, blue grama, western wheatgrass, and needle and thread grass.
