They were "bad lands" to travel, said both French-Canadian fur trappers and native Sioux. But today the beauty of these buttes draws 900,000 visitors a year to Badlands National Park in southwestern South Dakota. Streaked by pink iron oxide deposits, these cliffs form part of the park's major geologic feature, called the Wall. Extending about 60 miles (100 kilometers) from east to west, this imposing escarpment was sculpted over the past half a million years by ancient rivers that eroded the edge of a high plateau.
